The presidential campaign of Donald Trump has officially announced that it will now be accepting donations in cryptocurrency to support the candidate.
Cryptocurrencies Accepted for Donald Trump’s Campaign
The campaign’s website displays logos of Bitcoin, XRP, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Solana, SHIB, and Cardano, with the potential for new cryptocurrencies to be added in the future.
This addition to President Trump’s already groundbreaking digital fundraising operation marks the first time a major party presidential candidate has embraced cryptocurrencies for fundraising.
A Precedent in Electoral History
The outgoing president is not the only candidate offering supporters the option to donate in cryptocurrencies. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign announced it would also accept bitcoin donations last May.
The ability for politicians to collect cryptocurrency donations can be traced back to 2016, when Senator Rand Paul sought bitcoin contributions during that year’s presidential election. Presidential candidates Andrew Yang and Eric Salwell also accepted cryptocurrency donations in 2020.
