Tezos Unveils Ambitious Plan for Future Growth

The development teams behind the Tezos blockchain recently unveiled “Tezos X“, a set of technological upgrades promising a “massive increase in performance, composability, and interoperability.

This roadmap, extending until 2026, proposes to separate transaction execution into a distinct “canonical rollup,” capable of supporting atomic transactions between smart contracts written in different programming languages. The main Tezos blockchain would serve as the base layer for consensus and settlement.

Un plan ambitieux pour le futur de Tezos

The planned enhancements aim to modernize Tezos, a blockchain founded by the duo of Arthur and Kathleen Breitman. Tezos initially raised $232 million in its 2017 ICO, setting a record at the time and positioning the blockchain as a potential rival to Ethereum.

However, the project has struggled to maintain its leading position, with a market capitalization of $749 million, placing its native token XTZ at the 80th position according to CoinMarketCap, and 92% below its all-time high.

La vision de Tezos X

In 2022, developers started pushing to improve the scaling of the Tezos network. The central strategy includes “Smart Rollups“, a scaling technology where an optimized and dedicated secondary layer executes transactions while consensus and settlement are guaranteed by the main blockchain. Another key feature is a dedicated data availability layer on the main Tezos network.

The new roadmap echoes the scaling efforts pursued by Ethereum in recent years, where transaction execution is delegated to layer 2 auxiliary networks. New “modular” components have emerged to handle other functions ensured by Ethereum’s main chain, such as efficient storage of large amounts of data.

Une approche unique de la mise à l’échelle

What sets Tezos’ plan apart is that transaction execution could be handled by a single rollup rather than multiple layer 2s, as is the case on Ethereum.

The canonical rollup is expected to be implemented by 2026, according to the roadmap. This shift towards modular design, where interconnected groups of nodes assume different roles while maintaining a seamless experience for builders and users, is crucial for the future of Tezos.

Tezos X represents a major milestone in the evolution of the Tezos blockchain, promising significant improvements in performance and flexibility. This ambitious plan could reposition Tezos as a key player in the smart contracts and modular blockchains space.
