Suspension of Ronin Crypto Bridge after $9.8M Hacked by Whitehat
This Tuesday morning, the crypto bridge service Ronin was suspended after $9.8 million worth of tokens were siphoned off in an apparent whitehat (ethical hacker) attack.
The suspension was initiated while the Ronin team investigated a potential Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) exploit reported by whitehat hackers.
Incident Details
Crypto bridges like Ronin’s are essential tools in the crypto ecosystem, facilitating token transfers between different blockchains and providing interoperability that is not natively supported by these networks. Securing these bridges is crucial as they often handle significant sums and are prime targets for hackers.
In a post on X, Ronin co-founder @Psycheout86 announced the bridge’s suspension, ensuring that it currently secures over $850 million, which remains safe despite the incident.
Role of Whitehats in the Ronin Hack
Whitehats play a crucial role in the security of computer systems. Unlike malicious hackers, these individuals or entities exploit security vulnerabilities to identify and fix them, preventing actual malicious attacks. In the case of Ronin, the intervention of whitehats helped detect a potential vulnerability before it could be exploited by malicious actors.
On-chain Message and Market Reaction
The bridge developer sent a blockchain message to the hacker, presumed to be a whitehat, thanking them for saving user funds and inviting them to discuss further on the Blockscan chat.
Despite the incident, Ronin’s token, RON, remained unaffected. At the time of writing, the price of RON remained unchanged and even increased by 7% in the last 24 hours, amidst a general market uptrend. This resilience can be attributed to the transparent communication from the Ronin team and the continued trust of investors in the platform’s overall security.
