Pavel Durov Arrested in France, Telegram Founder Accused of Lack of Moderation
The digital landscape has been shaken by the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, at Le Bourget airport in France. The arrest came following a warrant issued by the French Office of Information and Mediation (OFIM), which accused Durov of insufficiently moderating Telegram’s content and allowing criminal activities to thrive on the platform. This event has had a direct impact on the value of the Toncoin (TON), which plummeted by 14.5% to $5.6.
The Reasons Behind Pavel Durov’s Arrest
According to TF1’s report, Durov’s arrest is linked to allegations that Telegram failed to adequately moderate its content, thereby enabling criminal activities such as drug trafficking, distribution of child pornography, and various forms of fraud. The OFIM, established in November 2023 to prevent violence against minors, considers Durov an accomplice due to his lack of cooperation with law enforcement.
Telegram’s Vigorous Defense
In response to Durov’s arrest, Telegram issued a statement asserting its compliance with European laws, including the Digital Services Act (DSA). The company maintains that its moderation practices adhere to industry standards and are constantly being improved. Telegram also vehemently denies the allegations against Durov, emphasizing that he has “nothing to hide” and frequently travels to Europe.
Telegram deems the idea that the platform or its owner can be held responsible for the abuses committed by third parties on the network as absurd. This defense comes as French authorities have not yet officially disclosed the charges against Durov, although initial indications point towards Telegram’s responsibility for organized criminal acts conducted or published on the platform.
Growing Support from the Crypto Community
Durov’s arrest has garnered significant support within the crypto community. Influential figures such as Elon Musk have voiced their support for Durov and called for his immediate release. Justin Sun, founder of Tron, has even offered to donate one million dollars to create a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) dedicated to securing Durov’s freedom, showcasing the community’s overwhelming support for him.
