CryptoPunk Alien Sold for $16 Million
The iconic NFT collection owned by Yuga Labs, CryptoPunks, has set a new sales record with the transaction of a rare alien specimen for over $16 million in Ethereum.
Why Such a Price for a CryptoPunk?
CryptoPunk #7804 stands out within the collection of 10,000 NFTs due to the rarity of its attributes. The character wears a beanie, a feature shared by only 254 CryptoPunks, smokes a pipe, a characteristic found in only 317 NFTs in the collection, and wears small glasses, a trait common to 378 CryptoPunks. However, its true value lies in the fact that it is one of the nine aliens in the CryptoPunks collection.
Peruggia, the seller of the NFT, shared his thoughts on the sale, describing it as “the end of an era” and expressing a feeling of impostor syndrome for not valuing the artwork as it deserved. Acquired in March 2021 for 4,200 ETH ($7.5 million at the time), the NFT trader held onto the piece for over three years, even rejecting an offer of approximately $18 million in 2022.
The sale of CryptoPunk #7804 has propelled the collection’s transaction volume beyond that of other popular NFTs like NodeMonkeys and Mad Lads in terms of weekly sales. CryptoPunks have recorded $21.5 million in sales over the past seven days.
