Nayib Bukele, the Pro-Bitcoin President of El Salvador, Re-elected for a Five-year Term, According to Exit Polls
Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador known for his pro-Bitcoin policies, is on track for another electoral victory for a five-year term. Exit polls indicate a decisive lead for Bukele, who enjoys immense popularity in the country and was leading by a wide margin in pre-election polls.
Since his election in 2019, Bukele has made waves by tackling gang violence through mass incarcerations and boldly embracing Bitcoin. In 2021, El Salvador became the first nation to adopt the largest cryptocurrency as legal tender. Under his leadership, the country has developed and introduced a crypto wallet, Chivo, to boost Bitcoin adoption and has started purchasing the asset as an investment.
International Reactions and Future Projects
While the adoption of Bitcoin by El Salvador has been widely applauded by Bitcoin enthusiasts, it has also drawn criticism from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This year, the country plans to issue its long-awaited “Volcano bonds”, backed by Bitcoin, after receiving regulatory approval in December. These bonds will finance a BTC mining industry powered solely by renewable energy.
