Binance Executives Sue Nigeria, Alleging Human Rights Violations
Two senior executives of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, have filed a lawsuit against two Nigerian government agencies, accusing the country of violating their fundamental human rights. This legal action comes after their detention since their arrival in the country in February, for consultations invited by the Nigerian government.
Details of the Complaint by Binance Executives
Tigran Gambaryan, Head of Anti-Money Laundering Compliance at Binance, and Nadeem Anjarwalla, Regional Manager for Africa, filed their complaint with the Federal High Court, demanding their immediate release, the return of their passports, and public apologies. According to local reports, their detention follows allegations of tax fraud brought against them and the company earlier this month.
Background of the Case
The two executives were invited to Nigeria to discuss Binance-related issues and were detained upon their arrival in February. Anjarwalla, who managed to escape last week, and Gambaryan were charged by Nigerian authorities with four counts of tax evasion. Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso stated that the company facilitated the untraceable movement of billions of naira, contributing to the instability of the currency exchange rate.
During a hearing held on Thursday, the accused government agencies were not represented, leading to the adjournment of the case until April 8.
