Ethereum continues to grow at a rapid pace. In this regard, Arbitrum, one of the flagship projects in the ecosystem, has just unveiled a major development to popularize Layer 3 on its network.
Arbitrum announces the launch of Layer 3 on its mainnet
This is an announcement that should delight Ethereum developers. In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter) on October 26th, Arbitrum simply explained that its Orbit program is now compatible with the mainnet.
As a reminder, Layer 3 – or third layer – is still in its early stages in the blockchain world. However, many people see it as the future of blockchain.
Similar to Layer 2 for Layer 1, Layer 3 would significantly increase the scalability of a blockchain by acting as a layer on top of Layer 2. Thus, it would allow for a significant increase in the number of transactions.
In June, Arbitrum officially launched its program called “Orbit”. In concrete terms, it is a new service that allows developers to create their own Layer 3 using Arbitrum.
Now, and after several months of waiting, Layer 3 developed using the Orbit program can be deployed on the Arbitrum mainnet. Arbitrum has revealed three major features related to the use of Orbit.
First, Orbit includes the AnyTrust functionality, which simply allows for transactions at a cost of less than a cent without compromising network security.
Next, the Arbitrum teams promote Stylus. It is a functionality that allows developers to write their smart contracts in Rust, C, and C++ while maintaining full EVM compatibility for the Orbit chain.
Lastly, thanks to the deployment of Orbit on the mainnet, projects will be assured of receiving future Nitro updates. Launched during the summer of 2022, Arbitrum Nitro is the latest version of Arbitrum. It has significantly improved Layer 2 performance.
Unsurprisingly, despite the bear market, Ethereum’s Layer 2 continues to produce new services in order to prepare for the future as best as possible. With Arbitrum’s announcement and Polygon’s evolution towards Polygon 2.0, the Ethereum ecosystem is undoubtedly in good hands.
